Tips for Better Headshots

In today’s hyper-connected world, your first impression isn’t always made in person—it’s made online. Whether you’re networking on LinkedIn, updating your business profile, refreshing your dating app photo, or simply upgrading your Facebook presence, a strong headshot can speak volumes before you say a word.

So, how do you ensure your headshot conveys confidence, professionalism, and personality? Below, we share the top three essential tips for taking headshots that elevate your profile—and your personal brand. And if you’re ready to really level up, we’ll show you how to go further with Learn Photography Canada’s People Photography Workshop, coming up across Canada on May 27th.

1. Light Like a Pro

The single most important element in photography—especially in portraits—is light. Good lighting can smooth skin tones, highlight eyes, and create flattering shadows. Bad lighting? It can make even the most polished professional look like they just rolled out of bed.

Here’s how to get it right:

  • Use soft, natural light whenever possible. The golden hours—early morning or just before sunset—offer the best natural glow. Position your subject so that the light falls across the face at an angle (often called Rembrandt or loop lighting). This gives dimension and shape to facial features.
  • Avoid harsh midday sun. It creates unflattering shadows under the eyes and chin. If you must shoot at this time, find open shade—like the edge of a building or under a tree—where the light is still bright but diffused.
  • Indoor? Use a large window. Face your subject toward it and turn off overhead lights to avoid color mixing.

Bonus Tip: A reflector—like a white foam board or a purpose-made silver/gold reflector—can bounce light back onto the face, reducing shadows and adding a lovely glow to skin.

2. Background & Framing Matter More Than You Think

A powerful headshot is clean, uncluttered, and draws all attention to the person—not the busy background behind them.

To create a strong composition:

  • Choose a neutral or slightly blurred background. A shallow depth of field (low f-stop, such as f/2.8 or f/4) helps keep the subject in sharp focus while the background softly melts away. This gives that pro-level “portrait look” you see in magazines.
  • Eliminate distractions. Watch for lamp posts growing out of heads, messy rooms, or photo-bombers. You want your audience to focus on you, not your cluttered living room or last-minute laundry pile.
  • Follow the “headroom” rule. Make sure there’s a bit of space above the head, and don’t crop too tightly on the chin or neck. For social media, a tighter crop from the chest up often works best, but always shoot a bit wider—you can crop later.

Pro Framing Tip: Position the eyes along the upper third of the frame. It’s more visually pleasing and psychologically engaging.

3. Expression & Pose: Be Real, Not Rigid

The magic of a good headshot lies in authentic expression. People want to connect with a person, not a statue. That means relaxed shoulders, natural smiles, and eyes that reflect your personality.

Here’s how to get a great expression:

  • Start with posture. Sit or stand tall, but not stiff. Roll your shoulders back slightly. A slight tilt to the head or a lean forward can make you appear more engaged and approachable.
  • Smile with the eyes. A real smile reaches the eyes—what photographers call a “Duchenne smile.” Think of something funny, talk with the photographer, or even breathe out a little laugh. The goal is to look genuinely you.
  • Take multiple shots. Even pros blink or grimace occasionally. Shoot several frames so you have options. Review together and choose the one where you look most at ease and expressive.

For LinkedIn: Go for a confident smile or neutral expression—something that conveys professionalism and trustworthiness.
For Instagram or creative profiles: Show more personality—try a head tilt, a bigger smile, or even include a prop or interesting background to reflect your style.
