Digital I – Beginner Photography

General Details (All Locations)

Time: 10am to 4pm.

General Tips:

  • The majority of our course DURING SUMMER (April – October) is outdoors. Please dress appropriately for conditions. This includes warm clothing, hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, bug-spray and other possible requirements. Watch out for the possible course weather cancellation approximately 24 hours in advance to the start of the course. You can find our weather cancellation policy in the terms and conditions located here.
  • There is quite a lot of standing and walking during these courses, so please pack lightly (you may want to leave any very large and heavy zoom lenses at home).
  • Make sure you charge your batteries as we will be taking hundreds of photos during the course. Bring a spare battery if you have one. If possible also bring your charger as there is some opportunity to charge your battery throughout the day.
  • Clear your memory card so that you have lots of space for pictures during the day.
  • You will not need a tripod for this class.
  • Bring a lens for this course. Only one lens is required but please bring all of your favourites so you can try them out through the day! Also bring prime (single-focus) lenses if you have them.
  • Lunch is provided. Please let us know ASAP if you have any dietary restrictions.
  • Course notes are included in the session. You may wish to bring extra paper and pen to take notes but most of our students get through the day and remember what is taught without supplementary notes.
  • We recommend bringing a bottle of water too.

Calgary Locations:

  • Summer (April – October): Downtown Calgary. We will be starting at Eau Claire underneath the Windmill in the small water park (to the West of the Eau Claire Markets). There is ample street and lot parking in this area. Please pay attention to the parking hours and payment requirements.
  • Winter (October – April): Heritage Park. 1900 Heritage Drive SW. There is all-day paid parking on site. You will be meeting your Instructor just inside the entrance doors to Gasoline Alley and may be spending short periods of time outside depending on the weather (so please bring a coat!).

Canmore Location:

  • Courses begin at the North West Mounted Police Barracks in Canmore (609 8 St, Canmore, AB T1W 2B1). We meet in the field just behind the barracks archway! There will be lots of walking, and the course is held exclusively outdoors – so please dress very warmly (mountain weather is VERY unpredictable) and wear super comfortable shoes. There is free, all-day parking at the Canmore ArtsPlace parking lot.

Burlington/Oakville Locations:

  • Summer (April – October): The course will meet at the beginning of the Brant Street Pier in Spencer Smith Park.
  • Winter (October – April): The course will meet just inside the entrance (but before you pay for admission) to the Royal Botanical Gardens RBG Centre which is located at 680 Plains Rd. W.

Mississauga Locations:

  • Summer (April – October): The course will meet in the car park for the Brueckner Rhododendron Gardens, located at 660 Lakeshore Rd W, Mississauga.
  • Winter (October – April): The course will meet just inside the entrance to the Centennial Park Conservatory, located at 151 Elmcrest Rd, Etobicoke.

Ottawa Location:

  • Summer (April – October): The course will meet underneath the Maman Statue (it looks like a spider) in the courtyard outside the National Gallery of Canada (380 Sussex Dr, Ottawa). There is ample street and lot parking in this area. Please pay attention to the parking hours and payment requirements.
  • Winter (October – April): The course will meet just inside the entrance (before admission) to the National Gallery of Canada, located at 380 Sussex Dr, Ottawa.

Edmonton Locations: 

  • Summer (April – October): Alberta Legislature grounds. Please meet at the pedestrian footbridge by the waterworks.   This bridge is located about 100 meters north of the Alberta Legislature building and south of the Visitor Centre.  There is also a large fountain that is south of the bridge.
  • Winter (October – April): Royal Alberta Museum located at 9810 103a Ave NW. We will be meeting just inside the doors (so that you’re out of the cold) but before Admission.

Kelowna Locations:

  • Summer (April – October): Downtown Kelowna by the waterfront. You will be meeting just under the Dolphin’s Statue.
  • Winter (October – April): Your course will meet just inside the entrance to the Okanagan Heritage Museum, located at 470 Queensway.

Digital II – Action & Composition

General Details (All Locations)

Time: 10am to 4pm.

General Tips:

  • Quite a lot of this course is outdoors. Please dress appropriately for conditions. This includes warm clothing, hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, bug-spray and other possible requirements. Watch out for the possible course weather cancellation approximately 24 hours in advance to the start of the course.   • Calgary Zoo located at 210 St. George’s Drive NE. Please meet just inside the glass doors at the Northern entrance before the underpass down to the main ticket office and entrance. Please note that parking at the Zoo is $10 per day. If you have a Calgary Zoo Membership it would be so very helpful if you could please bring it with you (thank you SO much in advance!).

Canmore Locations:

Ottawa Locations:

  • Summer (April – October): This course will meet at Confederation Park (Laurier Ave W & Elgin St) at the Lieutenant Colonel John By Fountain.
  • Winter (October – April): The course will meet just inside the entrance (before admission) to the National Gallery of Canada, located at 380 Sussex Dr, Ottawa.

Edmonton Locations: 

  • Summer (April – October): We will be meeting in the parking lot at the University of Alberta Botanic Garden (51227 AB-60, Spruce Grove, AB T7Y 1C5), 15 min SW of Edmonton on Hwy 60. We will be doing lots of walking, so please bring comfortable footwear. Mosquito repellent is also a good idea 🙂
  • Winter (October – April): Art Gallery of Alberta (2 Sir Winston Churchill Square). We will be meeting just inside the doors (so that you’re out of the cold).

Kelowna Locations:

  • Summer (April – October):  Your course will meet at Kelowna City Park, just near the walkway towards the Lawn Bowls Club and the Splash Park.
  • Winter (October – April): Your course will meet just inside the Rotary Center for the Arts, located at 421 Cawston Ave.

Digital III – Travel & Landscapes

General Details (All Locations)

Time: 10am to approximately 4pm.

General Tips:

  • The VAST majority of this course is outdoors. Please dress appropriately for conditions. This includes warm clothing, hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, and bug-spray. Watch out for a possible course weather cancellation approximately 24 hours in advance to the start of the course. You can find our weather cancellation policy in the terms and conditions located here.
  • Make sure you charge your batteries as we will be taking hundreds of photos during the course. Bring a spare battery if you have one. If possible also bring your charger as there is some opportunity to charge your battery throughout the day.
  • Clear your memory card so that you have lots of space for pictures during the day.
  • You will need a tripod for this class. Please also bring a shutter release and any filters that you may have as well. If you don’t have these things, that’s ok – but please let us know if you don’t have a tripod as we’ll put one in for you.
  • Bring all of your lenses to this course so you can try them out through the day! Also bring a wide-angle lens & your prime lenses if you have them.
  • Lunch is provided. Please let us know ASAP if you have any dietary restrictions.
  • Course notes are included in the session. You may wish to bring extra paper and pen to take notes but most of our students get through the day and remember what is taught without supplementary notes.
  • We recommend bringing a bottle of water too.

Calgary Location:

  • We will be meeting in CANMORE at the Tourism Alberta Canmore Visitor Information Centre. After the group meets we will all hop into a couple of cars together for the day and head into Banff.
  • If we are running a specialty course please disregard this meeting place and head to the place in your email.

Burlington/Oakville/Mississauga Location:

  • We will be meeting in the parking lot at Hilton Falls (4985 Campbellville Rd, Burlington, ON L7P 0G3).
  • Please be prepared for some hiking, so have proper footwear along.

Ottawa Location:

  • We will be meeting in the parking lot for the Hog’s Back Falls Lookout (600 Hogs Back Rd, Ottawa, ON K1V 1H8).
  • Please bring comfortable footwear and be prepared for some walking.

Edmonton Location:

  • We will be meeting in the parking lot at the University of Alberta Botanic Garden (51227 AB-60, Spruce Grove, AB T7Y 1C5), 15 min SW of Edmonton on Hwy 60.
  • We will be doing lots of walking, so please bring comfortable footwear. Mosquito repellent is also a good idea 🙂

Kelowna Location:

People Photography

  • Make sure you charge your batteries as we will be taking hundreds of photos during the course. Bring a spare battery if you have one. If possible also bring your charger as there is some opportunity to charge your battery throughout the day.
  • Clear your memory card so that you have lots of space for pictures during the day.
  • You will not need a tripod or flash for this course but please bring a reflector if you have one.
  • Bring a lens for this course. We would highly suggest bringing a zoom lens and any prime lenses you may have.
  • Lunch is provided. Please let us know ASAP if you have any dietary restrictions.
  • Course notes are included in the session. You may wish to bring extra paper and pen to take notes but most of our students get through the day and remember what is taught without supplementary notes.
  • We recommend bringing a bottle of water too.

Calgary Location:

  • Summer Location (April – October): We will be meeting in Fish Creek Park. Please meet your Instructor meeting next to the red building in between the car parks for the Bow Valley Ranche Restaurant.
  • Winter Location (October – April): Heritage Park located at 1900 Heritage Dr SW. We will meet just inside the entrance to Gasoline Alley.

Edmonton Location:


Ottawa Location:

  • The course will meet just inside the entrance (before admission) to the National Gallery of Canada, located at 380 Sussex Dr, Ottawa. During summer months please be prepared to spend considerable time outdoors and dress accordingly.

Kelowna Locations:

  • Summer (April – October): Downtown Kelowna by the waterfront. You will be meeting just under the Dolphin’s Statue.
  • Winter (October – April): Your course will meet just inside the entrance to the Okanagan Heritage Museum, located at 470 Queensway.

Night Photography

General Details (All Locations)

Time: 8pm to approximately 12am.

General Tips:

  • This course is outdoors. Please dress appropriately for conditions (it gets very, very cold outside at night). This includes warm clothing, gloves, hat, bug-spray and every single item of clothing you can think of for winter (like long johns). Watch out for the possible course weather cancellation approximately 24 hours in advance to the start of the course. You can find our weather cancellation policy in the terms and conditions located here.
  • Make sure you charge your batteries as we will be taking hundreds of photos during the course. Bring a spare battery if you have one.
  • Clear your memory card so that you have lots of space for pictures during the day.
  • There is quite a lot of standing and walking during this course, so please pack lightly (you may want to leave any very large and heavy zoom lenses at home).
  • You will need a tripod for this class. We have only one tripod for rental, so please check with us if you don’t have a tripod. You can also rent or purchase tripods from camera stores like Vistek if you would prefer. Please also bring a shutter release if you have one (and if you don’t have one that’s ok).
  • Bring all of your lenses to this course so you can try them out through the night (except your big zooms)! Also bring a wide-angle lens & your prime lenses if you have them.
  • We recommend that you have dinner before the session as no food or drinks are provided.
  • Course notes are included in the session. You may wish to bring extra paper and pen to take notes but most of our students get through the day and remember what is taught without supplementary notes.
  • We recommend bringing a bottle of water too.

Calgary Location:

  • We will be meeting at Sien Lok Park located at Riverfront Avenue & 1 Street Southwest. Please meet at the Memorial Cone which is in the centre of the park. Street parking is free after 6pm but there are a few paid parking lots nearby as well.

Edmonton:


Ottawa Location:

  • We will be meeting at the Colonel John By statue in Major’s Hill Park (Mackenzie Ave.). Please park in the World Exchange Plaza underground parking (45 O’Connor St.) so we can all travel safely as a group to our vehicles at the end of the night.

Mississauga Location:

  • We will be meeting at Kariya Park  (3620 Kariya Dr, Mississauga). There is parking in the area.

Burlington Location:


Kelowna Location:

  • We will be meeting in front of the tasting room at the Quail’s Gate Winery (3303 Boucherie Rd, Kelowna, BC V1Z 2H3). Please park away from the main entrance of the restaurant. We will be making our way down to the field below the property.

Lightroom Photo-Editing

General Details (All Locations)

Time: 10am to 4pm.

General Tips:

  • You will need to bring your own laptop with Lightroom loaded on.  We HIGHLY recommend that you download Lightroom on your computer at least 3 days before the class begins. Please email us if you are having ANY issues at all. This way we can solve them before class begins.
  • Please note that if you are purchasing a new version of Lightroom for this course we require that you have the Lightroom Classic CC version. You can download the Photographer Plan from Adobe here (scroll to the bottom and it’s the PHOTOGRAPHER PLAN that you want to purchase). Any version of Lightroom up to and including Lightroom 6 is fine as well (so Lightroom 3, 4, 5 & 6 are ok still, please don’t feel the need to get the Lightroom Classic CC version).
  • Please bring a computer charger to this class.
  • An external keyboard or mouse may be useful but not necessary.
  • Please bring pictures that you would like to edit. We will work on these during the class.
  • Course notes are included in the session. You may wish to bring extra paper and pen to take notes but most of our students get through the day and remember what is taught without supplementary notes.
  • Lunch is provided. Please let us know ASAP if you have any dietary restrictions.
  • We recommend bringing a bottle of water too.

Calgary Location:

  • This course will be held at the ActionEdge Business Coaching, 1835 20th Ave NW, Calgary. Parking is on street only so please pay attention to the street signs.

Burlington/Oakville Location:

  • We will be in the meeting room at the Tribeca Coffee Co. (174 Lakeshore Rd E, Oakville, ON L6J 1H6)

Mississauga Location:

  • We will be in the meeting room at the Tribeca Coffee Co. (174 Lakeshore Rd E, Oakville, ON L6J 1H6)

Ottawa Location:

  • The location is affected by the number of people registered for the course, so we will confirm the location closer to your date!

Edmonton Locations:

  • Summer (April – September): This course will be held at the Table Top Cafe 2.0 located at 10235 124 Street.
  • Winter (September – April): This course will be held at the City Arts Centre located at 10943 84 Ave NW. The course will be held in the Conference Room. Please ask for the Lightroom Photo-Editing course by Learn Photography Canada when you arrive.

Kelowna Location:

Business Skills for Photographers

Location:  ActionEdge Business Coaching Offices (1835 20 Ave NW, Calgary).

Time: Generally 6pm – 9pm but please consult your reminder email for confirmation.

What to bring:

  • Pen & notepad or a note taking device.
  • No camera is required for this session.

Other notes: 

  • Generally no food is served during this session so please come well fed :D.

Lightroom II

Location:  LPC’s Home Office in Evanston 8 Evansborough Green NW. Parking is street parking. Please note that this is a neighbourhood so please be respectful when parking.

Time: Generally 6pm – 9pm but please consult your reminder email for confirmation.

What to bring:

  • You will need to bring your own laptop with Lightroom loaded on.
  • Please bring a list of any issues that you are having in Lightroom so we can address them.
  • Please bring any HDR images or Panorama images that you would like to stitch together.
  • Please bring any photos that you would like to work on. The more the better.
  • Please bring a computer charger to this class.
  • An external keyboard or mouse may be useful but not necessary.

Other notes: 

  • Generally no food is served during this session so please come well fed :D.

Flash & Indoor Photography

Location: This course will be held at the ActionEdge Business Coaching Offices, 1835 20th Ave NW, Calgary. Parking is on street only so please pay attention to the street signs.

Time: Generally 6pm – 9pm but please consult your reminder email for confirmation.

What to bring:

  • Please bring a tripod, external flash and reflector. You will need to bring your own external flash, please contact us if you don’t have one and we can give you some rental options. A reflector is optional and it is not necessary to have one if you don’t already own one!

Other notes: 

  • Generally no food is served during this session so please come well fed :D.

Studio Photography

Location: This course is held at the common space of the apartment building located at 511 56th Ave SW. Please call or text Glynnis at: (403) 971-1363 when you arrive to be let in. Please park on the street (and pay attention to driveways, crosswalks etc – this is a residential neighbourhood).

Time: Generally 10am to 4pm but please consult your reminder email for confirmation.

What to bring:

  • Please bring your camera, tripod, flash (if you have one) and any other equipment that you’d like to try out!

Other notes: 

  • Please let us know asap if you have any food restrictions or allergies so we can get our lunch order correct.

Macro Photography

Location:

  • Summer (April – October): This course will meet at Riley Park. Please meet in the middle of the flower shaped garden beds.
  • Winter (October – April): This course will be held at the Calgary Zoo. Please meet just inside the glass doors at the Northern Entrance (before going through the underpass).

Time: Generally 1pm to 4pm but please consult your reminder email to see if there are any changes.

What to bring:

  • Please bring your camera & macro lens or close-up filters.
  • If you have them, you can also bring your extension tubes and teleconverters. If you don’t have them, that’s totally ok too!
  • You will also need a tripod (please ask us to rent one if you need it!).
  • Don’t forget to charge your camera battery & empty your SD card.

Other notes: 

  • Generally no food is served during this session so please come well fed :D.

Astrophotography

Location: This course takes place at Forgetmenot Pond in Kananaskis. We will be meeting at the toilet block in the second car parkThe course will finish at approximately 12am. Please drive very safely as there is a lot of wildlife on this road in the evening. Please also note that there is no cell phone reception at Forgetmenot Pond. Please ensure you are prepared with directions so you are not relying on your phone GPS and take usual precautions for your own safety.

Time: 9:30pm to 12:00am.

What to bring:

  • You will need a tripod for this class. Please either purchase one or organize to rent one from a camera store in Calgary such as Vistek or The Camera Store. Please also test you tripod to make sure it works before the class.
  • Astrophotography works best with a very wide angle lens. Please bring your widest angle lens with you.
  • Please bring an external shutter release if you have one. No problems if you don’t.
  • Please bring at least one flashlight. A head torch may be a good substitute or both is even better.

Other notes: 

  • Please dress VERY WARMLY. We will be spending a LOT of time standing still and you WILL GET COLD. More layers are better than less in this case ;).
  • Generally no food is served during this session so please come well fed :D.

Weather Cancellation Policy

We will likely postpone a course if any of these conditions are present:

  1. If the forecast predicts rain or snow of 50% probability or higher.
  2. If the forecast predicts that the day will be more than 50% cloudy or overcast.
  3. If the forecast predicts that temperatures will not rise higher than 10C for the day. Your safety, comfort and enjoyment are our highest priority. Photography should be FUN! (Not cold, or wet…).
  4. If the forecast predicts that temperatures will exceed 32C for the day and/or there is a Heat Warning issued by Environment Canada.
  5. If there is a weather warning (such as an Extreme Cold Warning or a Snowfall Warning) issued by Environment Canada (you have to be able to get to our course safely).
  6. For our CANMORE winter course – we will cancel this course in the same conditions as points 1, 2, 4 and 5 above, but if the forecast predicts that temperatures will not rise above 5C for the day (instead of 10C)
  7. For our Digital III – Landscapes & Photography Course  – we will cancel this course in the same conditions as points 1, 2, 4 and 5 above, but if the forecast predicts that temperatures will not rise above –5C for the day (instead of 10C).

Decisions regarding postponing will happen 24 to 48 hours in advance and exceptions may be made in certain circumstances (such as our winter course in Canmore).
