Carnaval d’Hiver Photography Escape — Quebec City (2027)

5 Days | One Beautiful Hotel | Breakfast Included

Experience winter the way it’s meant to be seen—alive, expressive, and full of story. Timed perfectly with Carnaval d’Hiver, this 5-day photography escape places you in the heart of Old Quebec during the most iconic winter celebration in North America. From glowing ice sculptures and snow-covered cobblestone streets to night parades and the legendary Ice Canoe Race on the St. Lawrence River, every day offers opportunities to capture images that feel authentic, human, and unforgettable.

We’ll stay in one very nice, centrally located Old Quebec hotel for the entire trip—no packing and unpacking, no long commutes—so you can focus on creating, learning, and enjoying the rhythm of the festival. Designed for photographers of beginner to intermediate levels, this experience balances hands-on instruction with time to explore, warm up, and reflect. Winter can be challenging, but with the right approach, it becomes one of the most rewarding seasons to photograph.

Daily Agenda

Day 1 — Arrival & Old Quebec at Blue Hour

Arrive in Quebec City and settle into our Old Quebec hotel. We’ll begin with a short winter-photography orientation covering cold-weather shooting, battery management, and working confidently with snow and low light. As evening falls, head out for our first shoot—lantern-lit streets, warm window light, and fresh snow creating a perfect introduction to winter storytelling.

Day 2 — Ice, Art & Carnival Energy

Spend the day immersed in the heart of Carnaval. Photograph the ice sculpture displays as light reveals texture and form, then move through Carnival activity zones capturing colour, expression, and movement. The focus is on composition, timing, and telling a story beyond the obvious. As night arrives, we’ll work with long exposures, motion blur, and festival lights to create dynamic winter images.

Day 3 — Ice Canoe Race & Historic Streets

One of the signature moments of Carnaval: the Ice Canoe Race on the St. Lawrence River. We’ll photograph the power, teamwork, and drama of this uniquely Quebec tradition, learning how to anticipate action and choose shutter speeds with purpose. In the afternoon, slow the pace in Petit Champlain and the Lower Town—stairs, shop windows, snow-covered details, and quiet human moments. Evening brings classic Old Quebec night scenes around Château Frontenac and Dufferin Terrace.

Day 4 — Winter Wonderland Beyond the Walls

Venture just beyond the city for a change of pace and scenery. Depending on conditions, we’ll visit either the Hôtel de Glace (ice hotel interiors and sculptural light) or Montmorency Falls in winter, where frozen mist and ice formations create dramatic compositions. Return to the city for a relaxed image review and editing discussion, then head back out for a Carnival night parade filled with light, colour, and energy.

Day 5 — Quiet Winter Stories & Wrap-Up

Begin the final morning with a peaceful shoot—snowy streets, early light, steam rising into the cold air, and the subtle details that often become favourite images. We’ll wrap up with a group image share, lessons learned, and guidance on applying winter-photography techniques back home before departures.
