LPC’s Top 10 Holiday Gift Picks for the Photography Lover!
This year we’ve put together a slightly different list of gifts this year – this is our top 10 gifts for the photography lover in your life! We’ve tried to include some gifts that are more and less expensive, so there should be something in there for everyone and every budget. We love these gifts, so if anyone wants to buy one for James or Jana just let us know 😁.
Gift #1: Photography Course
Ok – seriously did you really think we were going to put this anywhere else? Yes, gifting a photography course is one of the very best things you can do for the photography nut in your life. Why? What’s the point in having all of these amazing pieces of equipment if you have no idea how to use them properly?
You don’t have to spend a lot (we have gifts starting at $50, but can customize any amount you would like!), and we have SO many cities and courses to choose from! So seriously – check it all out.

Gift #2: Subscription to National Geographic
Ok – now on to our more serious gift suggestions. We love this idea. Actually we just ordered ourselves a 12 month subscript (not even lying). There are few things more magical than having the world’s best photographs, accompanied by some of the worlds best stories delivered to your mailbox. What a way to inspire your photographer friend?!
It’s $27USD for a Canadian 12 month subscription – so a pretty reasonable price all things considered. Please note that this is their current price, and we’re sure it will change plenty.
Gift #3: Lens Ball
We mean – how cool are these things!!! Lens balls are all the rage right now. Fad? Maybe? But do they add some FUN to your photography? Heck yes!!
Just check out these super cool shots some of our LPC Alumni’s have taken with their lens balls! Also they are around about the $40 mark so it’s a great fun gift without breaking the bank!
Gift #4: PixelStick LED Light Painting Tool
Ok – this is an expensive gift, but it’s so cool! The PixelStick allows you to “paint” a fantastic strip of light onto your long exposure images. Have a quick google search and you’ll soon see how much fun your photography friend could have with this one!!
Unfortunately, these fun tools can be in the vicinity of $370, but there is hours of entertainment here. And don’t forget to search for one secondhand! You never know your luck, and your photography friend will love you just the same.
Gift #5: Bokeh Kit
Oh the things we can do when we understand bokeh! Like use one of these fantastic bokeh kits. This allows you to create super neat images like… THIS ONE!
How much fun is that? You actually can make these yourself fairly easily (check out a process like this one). Or you can invest in a really fantastic kit – something like the one below! The one we’ve found is around the $110 mark including shipping but it comes with lots of wicked shapes to try:
Gift #6: Fujifilm Instax Mini
These are so much fun. Yes, they’re not “real” cameras, no, the photos aren’t the best quality – but who cares!!?? This is a super fun purchase for the photographer in your life because it helps them to slow down a little and appreciate the fun that comes from just shooting for giggles. And the results are really sweet.
The Instax Mini 9 is currently on sale at Walmart for only $70 too! BONUS!
Gift #7: A Nifty Fifty
Every photographer needs a little nifty fifty. What is this you ask? A nifty fifty is a 50mm lens. Generally an f1.8 is a good choice because they’re amazing quality and also pretty reasonably priced.
So if you’re searching for one of these to buy, you’ll need to know what brand of camera your photographer friend has (i.e. Canon / Nikon / Olympus etc). Then it’s a matter of a google search and you should be able to find what you’re looking for.
For Canon cameras a 50mm f1.8 lens costs approximately $150, for Nikon users it’s around about $250 (for the newer G model, the older D model is only $150).
If you’re not sure exactly what you’re looking for, just make sure you purchase from somewhere with a good return policy, or look online for a secondhand option and if it’s not the right one, your recipient can always resell it again. Remember it’s the thought that counts!
Gift #8: Handmade Camera Strap
We’ve become pretty big fans of the online store Etsy recently. We love that you can purchase amazing, hand-made goods that are produced by real people. Your purchase is actually supporting an individual who has an amazing skill! So one of our top gifts this year is to purchase a handmade and customized camera strap!
Don’t forget that you can buy a traditional camera strap, or a fantastic fancy camera strap, or a hand strap – there are lots of different options! And there’s a huge range of pricing here too – but you could spend anything from like $50 to over $150.
Gift #9: Unique Camera Bag
We’re back at Etsy again! This time we’re searching for camera bags! There are some SUPER cool options for incredible and unique camera bags on Etsy! There’s something really special about having a bag that almost no one else has, and the best part is that you have options galore. Prices range from $50 to over $250, so again there’s lots of choice!
Gift #10: Coffee Table Photo Book
Years ago we purchased a Lonely Planet Travel Book – a coffee table edition containing some of the most spectacular images taken across the world. That book is one of the most used in our household – and not just by us, but also by our kids! It’s inspiring. It’s beautiful. It makes you want to get out there and take your camera with you. Every photographer needs a source of inspiration and this is great place to start!!
There are lots of different options, but one that catches our eyes right now is the National Geographic Destinations of a Lifetime book. Best idea though is to head to your local bookstore and browse – something will stand out to you! This gift will set you back around about $40.
And that’s a wrap for our 2019 Gift Giving Guide!! These are our top 10 choices and we think we’ve done a pretty decent job of choosing a good range of prices and a good range of elements. Hopefully something in there stands out to you and we have given you ideas for a few people on your Holiday shopping list!
Happy shopping LPC’ers! Let us know if you find any amazing deals or new ideas – we’d love to share them around!
