Still Standing: Prairie Stories in Wood & Steel

A One-Day Old Structures Photography Adventure (Calgary → Sharples)  Saturday March 14, 2026

Some places don’t shout for attention—they wait. This one-day photography adventure is an invitation to slow down and listen.

Traveling from Calgary into the open prairie, you’ll photograph buildings and structures that have outlived their original purpose yet still hold deep character. Weathered barns, quiet main streets, and the iconic Sharples grain elevator become classrooms—teaching you how to see light, texture, and story with intention.

This experience isn’t about collecting locations. It’s about learning how to work a scene, simplify your compositions, and create photographs that feel honest and grounded.

Day Agenda | 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM

10:00 – 10:30 | Meet & Departure – Calgary

We begin with a short briefing to set the tone for the day:

  • Theme: Structures that endure

  • How to slow your seeing and shoot with intention

  • Key concepts: light on texture, clean edges, visual restraint

You’ll learn:
How to approach a photography day with purpose instead of urgency.

10:30 – 11:15 | Stop 1 – Prairie Pause (Carseland Area)

Location: Rural range roads east of Carseland

Weathered barns, fence lines, and open sky create the perfect first reset after leaving the city.

Focus:

  • Using negative space and prairie sky

  • Finding strong compositions in simple scenes

  • Seeing texture before subject matter

You’ll learn:
How to simplify a frame, slow down, and build images intentionally instead of reacting to everything around you.

11:15 – 12:00 | Stop 2 – Forgotten Main Street (Arrowwood)

Location: Arrowwood

A quiet prairie town with aging storefronts and subtle details—ideal for learning architectural storytelling.

Focus:

  • Squaring up buildings for graphic impact

  • Using colour with restraint (or knowing when to avoid it)

  • Finding emotion in small details and signs of former life

You’ll learn:
How to create a visual story from one building and recognize when less truly says more.

12:00 – 12:45 | Lunch (Included) & Reflection

A relaxed lunch stop and conversation:

  • Why we’re drawn to old structures

  • How patience changes what we notice

  • Optional image check-ins and coaching

You’ll learn:
How reflection sharpens both your photography and your creative confidence.

12:45 – 2:30 | Stop 3 – Sharples Grain Elevator (Signature Experience)

Location: Sharples

The heart of the day. This historic grain elevator and surrounding structures offer endless opportunity for deep visual exploration.  The Sharples Grain Elevator is scheduled for demolition shortly after our trip so we’ll be capturing a piece of history.

Focus:

  • Working a subject thoroughly instead of moving on quickly

  • Wide scenes, intimate details, and emotional frames

  • Creating a cohesive 3-image story from one location

You’ll learn:
How to extract multiple stories from a single place and build a meaningful photographic sequence.

2:30 – 3:15 | Stop 4 – Prairie Details & Final Frames

Location: Surrounding farmland near Sharples

Old equipment, fence lines, and subtle prairie elements provide a final creative challenge.

Focus:

  • Shooting with creative constraints

  • Letting light and composition guide your decisions

  • Finishing the day with intention

You’ll learn:
How limitation can sharpen creativity and elevate your final images.

3:15 – 4:00 | Wrap-Up & Return

  • Group share: one image that surprised you

  • Key takeaways you can apply to any genre of photography

  • Closing reflections on slowing down and seeing deeper
